If you’ve ever struggled with bipolar disorder, or had a friend or family member who has been through it, Beth Hart expresses it beautifully in a short essay on The Independent. Some of it rings true for schizophrenia as well. I can stop taking medication, and for a while – a week, maybe two – I’m on a euphoria, with high energy and inspiration. It isn’t manageable, though, and I get little done and eventually crash, with the psychotic symptoms hitting especially hard. Hart is able to harness this, and write music in either a depressed or manic state. She’s produced some very creative and inspired music this way. Listen to this delivery of Caught Out In the Rain.
