Fantastic Negrito at Triple Door

It was a great show last night, Fantastic Negrito is amazing onstage, but it almost turned out to be a disaster. We got the bill for the dinner and wine: $87. Ouch! I could cover that, though, and reached for my billfold. My debit card was missing! I wasn’t sure what to do. We had $95 cash between us and left that, leaving immediately to trace the card. I feel bad about the tip. I was panicked on the ride home. The card turned up on my desk. I think I remember what led me to pull it out. I guess I set it aside.

Back to the show. Negrito is superb in his high-energy, charismatic performance. He wanders the stage, never quiet, engaging the audience. He switched from guitar to keys to sing a sappy love song, then said it wasn’t “honest.” It was followed by a number about his partner being a “cancer.” He told the story about one of his earlier songs, Lost in a Crowd, and it was interesting. He originally heard it from his grandmother.

My partner observed that the audience was entirely white. She was right. That’s kind of a surprise, Negrito sings about Black struggles and his blues/funk fusion would seem to appeal to wider audiences. I also noticed that he brought some younger fans to the blues.
